Sabugal Castle
Sabugal, PortugalIn the center of Portugal, in the district of Guarda, is what is nicknamed Castelo das Cinco Quinas.
It was in the reign of D. Dinis that the castle of Sabugal became part of Portuguese territory, after several disputes with the kingdom of León and its passage was marked through the Treaty of Alcanices (or Alcanizes), on September 12, 1297 .
In place of the castle, there had already been a fortification from Roman times, and the Arabs also passed through here... and later the site was won by D. Afonso Henriques and then lost to the King of León. many owners. A well-known phrase is: “They are roses, sir, they are roses…” And the origin of this story could be Sabugal. Legend has it that it was right here, in the castle square, that the Miracle of the Roses took place... some say it was in Coimbra...
