Sold onto Lord Leverhulme of Unilever, the Castle, grounds, Stornoway and surrounding areas was left to the people of Stornoway in 1924, culminating in the first land owning trust in Scotland being established. The building had a museum added in the redevelopment which houses a rich history of the islands and some of the Lewis Chessmen which were discovered in a sand dune in Uig in 1831.
