In 1956, Archbishop Luis Chávez y González undertook the reconstruction works, the first stone was laid on Friday, October 12. of the cathedral that lasted for four decades.
During this time, the cathedral witnessed the numerous social conflicts that the country was experiencing. On August 6, 1975, the Popular Revolutionary Bloc (BPR) took over the temple in protest against government repression. It was the first of several shots of the cathedral that took place until 1980. Under the floor of the cathedral there is a large space called "the crypt", in which there are two chapels.
