The Leshan Giant Buddha, also known as the Dafo or Lingyun Giant Buddha, is a famous Buddhist cultural heritage site located in the city of Leshan, Sichuan Province, China. It is renowned worldwide for its enormous size and rich history.
The Leshan Giant Buddha was carved out of a cliff face overlooking the meeting of the Minjiang, Daduhe, and Qingyi Rivers. It was built during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) by a monk named Hai Tong, who hoped to calm the turbulent waters in this area and protect the people who traveled through it.
The statue stands at a staggering height of 71 meters (233 feet) and is the largest carved stone Buddha in the world. Its shoulders are 28 meters (92 feet) wide, and its smallest toenail is large enough to accommodate a seated person.
