Travel Itinerary
- Exclusive to travelers from this booking.
In Transylvania at the southern foot of mighty Harghita mountains you can find the legendary limestone canyon of Vargyas stream colored by steep rock walls, giant cliffs and numerous caves. Meet your guide in the small village of Meresti (Homorodalmas, 35 km from Odorheiu Secuiesc, 87 km from Brasov) and he will drive you on forest roads to the starting point of your fascinating journey. Stroll in the breezy canyon and discover its tiny secrets and legends as you walk along the shore of the stream, passing huge tree roots, hopping from rock to rock and going through numerous wooden suspension bridges set above the stream.
As you walk, learn about the canyon’s history and geographical make-up and drink in the untouched scenery. The scene looks like a fairy tale stage. Let it be winter or summer, the creatures of the gorge live their undisturbed idyllic life. Dippers, river otters and European beavers rule the crystal clear waters, European wildcat goes for hunting in the forest and brown bears frequently visit the clearings and steep rock grass covered slopes. In caves you can meet the biggest bat colony of Eastern Carpathians, you can discover the tiniest creatures living on the bat-guano deposits on the cave floors, and also get familiar with the hunting methods of cave spiders. At the end of the tour you pay a delicious visit to the artisan cheese-making workshop from Merești, where you not only taste a rich variety of fragrant home-made cheese, but also learn a few production secrets during the tasting tour.
