About the Activity

One of Hinduism’s seven sacred cities, Ujjain boasts a wealth of cultural heritage, largely in the form of temples. Situated on the banks of the Shipra River, the city dates back to 600 BC and was once the residence of Ashoka. It was also the political and commercial hub of central India and the capital of the ancient Avanti Kingdom. Ujjain’s spiritual charm is undeniable. The famous poet, Kalidas, described it as ‘The town fallen from Heaven to bring Heaven to Earth’. The many temples give you glimpses of a glorious past. Omkareshwar is another pilgrimage destination in Madhya Pradesh, Central India. It is 100kms from Indore, on the bank of holy Narmada river. Its name "Omkareshwar" is derived from hindu god Lord Shiva. Mamaleshwar temple in Omkareshwar is the actual jyotirlinga temple.

The temple enshrines a Shivalinga opposite Nandi the Bull, which during Mahashivratri draws thousands of devotees to this religious site. You can also spot many sadhus with ash-smudged bodies and long matted hair around this temple. Legend has it, that the bull was gifted to Shiva and Parvati as a wedding present from King Daksha, the father of Goddess Parvati.
