Québec, former capital of New France, features hundreds of historical markers, a unique architecture as well as French and British institutions that have survived to this day. For this reason, Old Québec is the ideal UNESCO World Heritage destination to help history lovers connect the dots of North America’s history. France, England and Spain claimed territories in the New World from the 1500s. In the wake of the Age of Enlightenment, English and Spanish colonies of North America won their independence and became the USA and México! Nouvelle France faced a different destiny. Through Franco-English conflicts and treaties, Louisiane was ceded to Spain, then back to France and purchased by the Americans. Thus, Cajuns and Creoles pursued their American dream. However, French Acadie and Canada became British colonies. Despite this, Samuel de Champlain’s dream of a durable French presence goes on in the St. Lawrence Valley, cradle of Canada and heart of French-speaking America.3 hours
