Travel Itinerary
This 8 hours day trip starts 9 am with pick-up from your hotel / guesthouse in Pärnu or Soomaa region. Drive to Soomaa national park takes less than hour, there you will get life-jackets, paddles and the canoe trip on the Raudna river starts. Rivers flowing through Soomaa National Park play a major role in shaping the local landscapes. When rainwater or meltwater runs off Sakala Upland, the rivers in Soomaa, which flow on flat terrain, are unable to accommodate it all at once and abandon their usual channels. In Soomaa, this exceptionally high level of water is accompanied by flooding and is called the ‘fifth season’.
We will pass beautiful floodplain meadows and within first hour reach Lemmjõgi Forest, many traces of beaver activity can be seen here. In the place where the Raudna and Lemmjõgi rivers join we take canoes to the land and go for a first walk of this day. Forest trail runs along the banks of rivers, this is covered with often flooded floodplain forest. Broad-leaved trees, such as elms, oaks, lindens, ashes, maples and European white elms, grow in this alluvial forest, which are becoming increasingly rare in Estonia.
After one more hour of canoeing it is time to have a picinc lunch. Then we go for a walk to Kuresoo bog. It the largest bog ((11,000 ha)) in Estonia which is almost unaffected by human activity, featuring large open areas that serve as an ideal rest site for passing geese and cranes. In the southern part of the bog which we will walk, is the highest and steepest bog slope documented in Estonia, reaching up to 8 metres. The best way to enjoy the views of this natural phenomenon is on Ingatsi study trail.
About 4pm we drive back to Pärnu, and we well be brought to your hotel ca 5pm.
