History of Chimney Rock

Chimney Rock is a 5,739-foot-tall rock formation located in Ouray County, Colorado. The formation is made of igneous rock and consists of multiple columns that taper to a point at the top. The name "Chimney Rock" was given to the formation by prospectors in the 19th century, who thought that the smoke coming from their campfires looked like smoke coming from a chimney. The area surrounding Chimney Rock has been inhabited for centuries by the Ute people, who have long considered the formation to be sacred. In 1873, the first European settlers arrived in the area and established a town called Shelter Rock near the base of the formation. Today, Chimney Rock is a popular tourist destination and is home to a visitors center and hiking trails.

  2. There are two ways to get to the top of Chimney Rock: via the 0.4-mile hiking trail or the 1,000-step staircase. The hike to the top is moderate in difficulty and takes about an hour round-trip. 
  3. If you're planning on hiking to the top of Chimney Rock, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. The staircase can be very crowded during peak times, so it's best to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon if possible. 
  4. Within the monument boundaries is also a natural cold water spring that has been used by locals for years to cool off on hot summer days.

How to Reach Chimney Rock

The easiest way to reach Chimney Rock is to take the Ouray County Road 8 south from Ouray for about six miles. From there, you will see a sign for the trailhead on your left. The trail itself is just over a mile long and gains about 500 feet in elevation.

Admission to Chimney Rock is $9 for adults and $7 for children ages 6-12 (children under 6 are free). You can purchase tickets at the gate or in advance online.
