Mount Bross is a mountain peak in Park County, Colorado. The summit of the peak is at an elevation of 14,172 feet (4319 meters). Mount Bross was named after James Bross, who was a member of the Hayden Survey team that explored the area in 1873. The first recorded ascent of the peak was made in 1874 by William Henry Jackson, who was also a member of the Hayden Survey team. In 1877, Mount Bross was the site of a mining claim known as the "Lode Claim." The Lode Claim was worked intermittently until around 1900. There is no evidence that any significant amounts of minerals were ever extracted from the claim. Nowadays, Mount Bross is a popular destination for hikers and climbers. The standard route to the summit follows a trail that leads up from the town of Alma, Colorado. The trailhead is located at an elevation of 10,360 feet (3159 meters). From Alma, the trail climbs steeply for about 2 miles (3 kilometers) before leveling off somewhat as it approaches treeline. Above treeline, the trail follows a ridgeline to the summit of Mount Bross. The round-trip hike from Alma is about 8 miles (13 kilometers) long and takes most people between 4 and 6 hours to complete.
