The Smuggler Mine is located in Pitkin County, Colorado, just outside the town of Aspen. The mine was established in 1879, and it quickly became one of the most productive silver mines in the state. Over the next few decades, the mine produced millions of dollars worth of silver, making its owners very wealthy. However, in 1917, the United States government passed a law requiring that all silver mines be nationalized. As a result, the Smuggler Mine was forced to close its doors. However, it reopened a few years later and continued to operate until 1971. Today, the Smuggler Mine is a popular tourist destination, and visitors can take tours of the old mine workings.

The best time to visit the Smuggler Mine is from June to September. During this time, the weather is warm and dry, making it ideal for hiking and exploring the area. 

1. Smuggler Mine is located in a remote area, so be sure to plan your travel accordingly. Make sure you have enough fuel and supplies for the journey, and be aware of the road conditions.

The maximum time allowed for exploration is four hours. This time limit is necessary to ensure the safety of visitors and to protect the integrity of the site.

To reach the mine, take the Castle Creek Road (gravel) from Aspen for approximately 8.5 miles. At mile marker 14, turn right onto a jeep trail and follow this for 1/2 mile to the mine site. Please note that the last 1/2 mile of road is very steep and may be impassable when wet.
