Runyon Lake is a beautiful place to visit all year round. Located in Pueblo County, Colorado, the lake is nestled in a picturesque setting at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, canoeing, and picnicking in the summer months, and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter. There are also several miles of trails that wind through the surrounding forest, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a vigorous hike. No matter what time of year you visit, Runyon Lake is sure to offer something for everyone to enjoy.

The history of Runyon Lake, Pueblo County, Colorado is a long and varied one. The lake was originally created by the damming of the Arkansas River in 1889, and it served as a popular recreation spot for many years. However, the lake was eventually drained in order to provide water for the growing city of Pueblo. The empty lakebed became a dumping ground for trash and debris, and it wasn't until the 1970s that efforts began to clean up the area. Today, Runyon Lake is once again a popular spot for fishing, boating, and picnicking. And while its history may be somewhat checkered, the beauty of the lake remains intact.

The best time to visit is in the late spring or early summer, when the temperatures are mild and the wildflowers are in bloom.

1. Runyon Lake was created in 1874 when a dam was built on the Arkansas River. The lake is named after early settler Benjamin Runyon, who homesteaded the land that is now the lake area.
2. In addition to being a popular recreation spot, Runyon Lake is also home to several species of fish, including rainbow trout, brown trout, and cutthroat trout.
3. Runyon Lake is located within the boundaries of the San Isabel National Forest, which covers 1.5 million acres in Colorado.
4. Swimming is not allowed in the lake but there is a swimming beach nearby.

While it's possible to visit Runyon Lake in a day trip, spending a night or two in the wilderness is the best way to truly experience all that this beautiful place has to offer.

To reach Runyon Lake in Pueblo County, Colorado, travel west on Highway 50 from Pueblo. After approximately 15 miles, take a left turn onto County Road 96. Continue on this road for about 3 miles until you see the sign for Runyon Lake on the right. There is a small parking area at the trailhead. From here, it is an easy half-mile hike to the lake.

While there is no entrance fee to explore the park, visitors are encouraged to purchase a daily or annual pass to help support the maintenance and operation of the park. 

It is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. The best time to come is early in the morning, when the air is still cool and the water is calm.
