History of Upper Sand Creek Lake

Upper Sand Creek Lake is a man-made reservoir in Saguache County, Colorado. The lake was created in the early 1960s by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation as part of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. The purpose of the project was to provide irrigation water for crops and to generate hydroelectric power. The dam that impounds Upper Sand Creek Lake is located about eight miles upstream from the town of Saguache. The lake has a capacity of about 77,000 acre-feet, and it covers a surface area of approximately 1,600 acres. Upper Sand Creek Lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and camping. It is home to a variety of fish species, including trout, catfish, and bass. The lake is also a popular stopover for migrating birds. In the fall and winter, bald eagles can often be seen perching in the trees along the shoreline.

Follow County Road 8 for approximately 3 miles before turning west onto Forest Road 107. After another mile, you will reach the trailhead parking area. From the trailhead, it is a relatively easy 1-mile hike to the lake.
