The Russell Lakes are a group of three natural lakes located in Saguache County, Colorado. The lakes are named after Captain William Russell, who was one of the first settlers in the area. Captain Russell arrived in the area in 1859, and he and his family were the only settlers for several years. In the early 1860s, a few other families moved into the area, and the community began to grow. However, the settlement was still very small, and it wasn't until the late 1870s that significant growth took place. By that time, the population had reached around 100 people, and there were several businesses in town, including a hotel and a general store. Today, the Russell Lakes are a popular recreation spot, and they offer fishing, boating, and camping opportunities. The best way to reach Russell Lakes is to take Highway 285 north from the town of Saguache. After about 15 miles, you will see a sign for the turnoff to FS Road 589. Turn onto this road and follow it for about 6 miles until it dead-ends at the lake shore. From here, you can explore the lakes and their surrounding wilderness areas.

There is no entrance fee to explore Russell Lakes, Saguache County, Colorado. However, there are many activities available for a fee, such as camping, fishing, and canoeing. 

The lakes are open to the public from dawn to dusk, and there's plenty of parking available.
