Originally built in the late 1700s, it is one of the oldest surviving residences in the area and is situated near important landmarks, such as the Ten Broeck Mansion, the Erastus Corning II Tower, the Albany Rural Cemetery, Historic Cherry Hill, Albany City Hall, and the Cathedral of All Saints. The house was purchased by the Pruyn family in 1836, and was the home of the Pruyns until 1917.
