The protected area home to Uluru and Kata Tjuta rock formations that were formed about 350 million years ago during the Alice Springs Orogeny- a major intraplate tectonic episode. Uluru is recognized as "Australia's most natural icon". Anangu are the traditional Aboriginal owners of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. They believe that their culture was created at the beginning of time by ancestral beings.
