Monument Canyon - 13 Things to Know Before Visiting

Visitors can explore the canyon via hiking, biking, or horseback riding, and there are also several camping sites located within its boundaries. Hikers can explore the canyon on a variety of trails, and picnickers can enjoy the tranquility of the canyon. 

This canyon was formed over millions of years by the erosion of the sandstone that makes up the area’s cliffs and mesas. The canyon is best known for its striking red rocks, which are a result of the high iron content in the stone. Because of its unique geology, the Monument Canyon has been a popular destination for hikers and climbers for many years. In addition, the area is home to a number of important archaeological sites, including the ruins of an ancient pueblo. The first people to live in the area were the Fremont people, who left behind petroglyphs and pictographs. Later, the Ute people inhabited the canyon. The Mesa Verde National Park, which protects these sites, was established in 1906. 

The best time to visit is in the late spring or early summer, when the weather is warm and the river is running high. At this time of year, the canyon is filled with the sounds of birds and insects, and the air is alive with color.

1. The canyon is quite large, so it's best to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for some walking.
2. To really experience Monument Canyon, it's best to go during the offseason when there are fewer crowds. Spring and fall are ideal times to visit.
3. Remember that this is a wilderness area, so be sure to pack out any trash you bring in.
4. If you're lucky enough to camp in the canyon overnight, be sure to obey all fire regulations. Campfires are only allowed in designated areas, and should be kept small and under control at all times.
5.  Please respect the canyon and its inhabitants - do not touch or disturb any of the plants or animals you see.
6. Pack snacks or a lunch. There are no food options available once you’re in the canyon. 
7. Be aware of your surroundings. There are drop-offs in the canyon, and it is easy to become disoriented if you're not paying attention. Stay on the trail and heed any warnings signs.

1. It features several notable landmarks, including Independence Monument, Devils Tower, and the Wall of Sixteen Windows.
2. The canyon has been featured in several films and television shows, including Thelma & Louise and Planet Earth II. 
3. There are several volcanoes located nearby, including the infamous Mount St. Helens.
4. Summer temperatures in the canyon can reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
5. It is considered one of the best places in the world to stargaze, due to its high elevation and lack of light pollution. 

Visitors are advised to limit their stay to two hours, as the canyon can become quite hot during the day. However, many people choose to stay longer, and there are several hike and bike trails that allow for longer explorations. 

This scenic spot can be reached by taking US Highway 24 West from Grand Junction or east on State Highway 12 until it connects with Interstate 70 near Cheyenne Wells where you will then travel north towards Keystone; follow this highway signs for about 90 more miles (about two hours) to reach our destination of choice! From there head out into the wilderness and look up - because what's really worth seeing never lies below ground level...

The Entrance Fee to Monument Canyon is $30 per vehicle or $25 for motorcycle. The pass is valid for seven days.

The opening hours of Monument Canyon are 8 am to 6 pm on weekdays and 9 am until 5pm weekends.
