History of Cirque Mountain

The peak of the mountain is 12,951 feet (3,950 m) above sea level. Cirque Mountain was named by the United States Geological Survey in 1904. The name "Cirque" comes from the French word for "circle". Cirque Mountain is located in the San Juan Mountains. The mountain is part of the Uncompahgre Wilderness Area. Cirque Mountain is located about 10 miles (16 km) north of the town of Ouray, Colorado. There are several hiking trails in the area. The most popular route to the summit of Cirque Mountain is via the Bear Creek Trail. The Bear Creek Trailhead is located just outside of Ouray. The trail climbs up Bear Creek Canyon and then crosses over into Chicago Basin. From there, it climbs up to the summit of Cirque Mountain. The total round trip length for this hike is about 21 miles (34 km).
