Teakettle Mountain - 13 Things to Know Before Visiting

Teakettle Mountain is a popular hiking destination in Ouray County, Colorado. The mountain gets its name from the numerous teakettles that can be found along the trail. Legend has it that the teakettles were left behind by a group of prospectors who were forced to abandon their claim after an avalanche buried their camp. Today, the teakettles are a popular souvenir for hikers, and many people choose to leave their own kettle at the summit in honor of the mountain's history. Despite its popularity, Teakettle Mountain remains a challenging hike, with an elevation gain of over 2,000 feet. 

The best time to visit Teakettle Mountain is during the summer months, when the weather is warm and dry.

1. Bring plenty of water and snacks. There are no convenience stores on the mountain, so come prepared with everything you need.
2. Be cautious of wildlife. There are bears and other animals in the area, so please follow all safety guidelines.
3.  Leave no trace. Please respect the environment and pack out everything you bring in with you.
4. Talk to the locals. They're the experts on the area and can offer advice on where to go and what to do.
5. Slow down and enjoy the journey. It's not about getting to the top as fast as possible - it's about savoring every moment along the way.

1. Although it’s a popular destination for day hikes, Teakettle Mountain is also a popular spot for backpacking and camping. There are several primitive campsites along the trail.
2.  In addition to Mount Sneffels, hikers can also see the iconic 14,000-foot peaks of the San Juan Mountains from the summit of Teakettle Mountain.
3.  The first half of the trail is relatively easy, but it gets steeper as you get closer to the summit. There are several switchbacks near the top.
4. Although it’s a moderate hike overall, Teakettle Mountain is not recommended for beginners due to the off-trail section near the summit.
5. In addition to spectacular views, Teakettle Mountain is also home to an abundance of wildlife including mule deer, elk, and bighorn sheep. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot one on your hike!
    

While there is no official time limit for exploring the mountain, most visitors allow for at least a full day to enjoy all that Teakettle has to offer. 

The trailhead can be reached by driving south on Highway 550 from Ouray. After about eight miles, you'll see a sign for the Teakettle Mountain trailhead on your left. 

There is no entrance fee for Teakettle Mountain in Ouray County, Colorado. However, there is a parking fee of $5 per day.

The mountain is open to the public from dawn to dusk and the time may vary depending on season.
