Its course follows a generally southeasterly direction as it goes through the city of Utrecht towards Wijk bij Duurstede where it intersects the Lek branch of the Rhine and then continues on to the river Waal near Tiel, with a branch, the Lek Canal, to the Lek near Nieuwegein.

Together this forms an area of 642 ha, the largest continuous area of the Utrecht Landscape , of which Bornia is the largest with 289 ha. Bornia is located between Zeist , Austerlitz and Driebergen-Rijsenburg in the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug . The A12 forms the southern boundary for the nature reserve.

Castellum Hoge WoerdCastellum Hoge Woerd is a contemporary reconstruction of a Roman fort in the Dutch hometown of De Meern . It houses, among other things, the Hoge Woerd Archaeological Museum , the Podium Hoge Woerd theater hall , a center for nature and environmental education and a café-restaurant. The largest object in the Hoge Woerd Museum is a 25 meter long Roman river prae from the 2nd century.

It was built from 1892 on the ruins of the old castle in neo-Gothic style. This area has been designated as a special protection zone for birds and for plants and other animals and includes polders and lakes. Dom TowerThe Dom Tower of Utrecht is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, at 112.5 metres in height. It is considered the symbol of Utrecht. IT was built between 1321 and 1382. The tower stands at the spot where the city of Utrecht originated almost 2,000 years ago. Even if you can’t see it, you are still likely to hear one of its thirteen bells that weigh between 880 and 18,000 pounds.

Fort BlauwkapelFort Blauwkapel is a Dutch fort near Utrecht . The fort was built in 1818-1821 as part of the New Dutch Waterline and is one of the largest forts of the line.The 19th century fort has a quadrangular basic shape with an extension in each corner (bastion). Around 1850 the bombproof guardhouse was built on the reduit. Two more bombproof barracks were added later, one of which remains.

Fort RhijnauwenFort bij Rijnauwen is a Dutch fortress near the hamlet Rhijnauwen in the municipality of Bunnik. It is part of the New Dutch Waterline. With an area of 32 hectares , this is the largest fortress in the NHW. It was built in 1867 - 1869 as part of the forward line forts near Utrecht. This forward line served to close off the Houtense Vlakte. The fortress is built according to the modern polygonal system.

Gerbrandy TowerThe Gerbrandy Tower is a tower which was built in 1961used for directional radio services and for FM and TV broadcasting. It is named after Peter Gerbrandy, prime minister of the Netherlands. It is the tallest broadcasting tower in the Netherlands. More impressive, though, is what the tower becomes during the holiday season. Every year around Christmas, workers turn this 366.8-meter-tall tower into the world’s tallest Christmas tree.

GriftparkThe Griftpark is a park in the Dutch city of Utrecht. However, the site had become heavily polluted. The park was therefore nicknamed Gifpark in Utrecht . The soil in the area was remediated between 1993 and 2002, after which it was redesigned as a city park. The contaminated soil is, as it were, wrapped up so that the poison can no longer cause any damage.In the park there is a skating rink that enjoys great popularity. Just like the football cage, often used by students.

HaarrijnseplasThe Haarrijnseplas is a lake area in the Dutch municipality of Utrecht .The two lakes have a combined surface area of roughly 90 hectares . The lakes were created at the beginning of the 21st century along the A2 highway in the Vinex district of Leidsche Rijn . 13 million m³ of sand has been extracted at this location , a large part of which has been used to raise the level of this district. In addition to recreation , the lakes were given a function in water management.
